Off Grid Glass Firing | Making Dichroic Fused Glass Jewelry

DSC02982I have lived “off the grid” for over 10 years in Taos, New Mexico. When I took fused glass classes a few years ago I assumed I would not be making dichroic fused glass jewelry at home. To my surprise I came across information about firing glass in the microwave with a special kiln. I decided to buy a kiln and try it. It took a lot of trial and error but it does work. The kiln reaches temps up to 1400 degrees in 6 to 8 minutes! Pictured is a kiln just out of the microwave and glowing from the heat inside. I do have to run the generator when I am firing as the microwave pulls a lot of power but it does make it possible for me to create my dichroic fused glass jewelry.
